World Health Organization approves Bharat Biotech's Covaxin for Emergency use against Corona virus
The World Health Organization (WHO) has granted emergency use of Covaxin (Developed by Bharat Biotech), adding a growing portfolio of vaccines approved by WHO from the prevention of Corona virus.
The Technical Advisory Group of WHO has set the Covaxin vaccine meets WHO standards for protection against Covid-19 , that the benefit of the vaccine far outweighs risks and the vaccine can be used around the globe.
- Covaxin vaccine was also reviewed by WHO's SAGE (Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization) and recommended use of Covaxin in 2 doses, with a dose interval of 4 weeks, in all age groups of 18 and above. Similar : Saudi Arabia approves Pfizer corona vaccine for 5 to 11 years age group
- However, WHO also disclosed that, the available data on vaccination of pregnant women with Covaxin vaccine are insufficient to assess vaccine safety efficacy in pregnancy, studies in pregnant women are planned, including a pregnancy sub-study and pregnancy registry.
- The 'Made in India' vaccine is finally approved by WHO and Indians who have received may not need to self-quarantine or face restrictions when traveling abroad.
- Covaxin has demonstrated 77.8% effectiveness against symptomatic Corona virus and 65.2% protection against the Delta variant. Recommend : Saudi Jawazat denies of report converting Visit visas into Iqama
- The Emergency Use Listing (EUL) would allow Bharat Biotech to ship the vaccine to countries that rely on WHO guidance for their regulatory decisions. The Covaxin vaccine is extremely suitable for low and middle income countries due to easy storage requirements.
- Covaxin is 7th to win WHO following 2 mRNA shots by Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, Johnson and Johnson, Sinopharm and Sinovac.
