Indonesia earthquake - 350 homes destroyed and 800 people homeless
An earthquake that hit Indonesia on Tuesday, and shook parts of the eastern region of the country, destroyed about 350 homes and left about 800 people homeless, said an official in Indonesia on Wednesday. Follow Saudi Expatriates on imo mobile app
The earthquake, which occurred off the island of Flores Yesterday, and measured 7.4 on the Richter scale, triggered a tsunami warning, but it was lifted two hours later. Officials said tide gauges showed a slight increase in the water level.
- The spokesperson for the Indonesian National Agency for Disaster Management Abdul Mahari said that the region of the Selayar Islands was the most affected by the quake. He added that besides the affected homes, the quake also damaged 3 schools, 2 houses of worship and a port. - He added that 7 people were injured, but there were no reports of deaths. In Seca district on the island of Flores, 770 people have taken shelter in government buildings.
- According to the US Geological Survey, the quake hit at a depth of 18.5 kilometers (11.5 miles) under the sea. Its epicenter was located 112km (74 miles) north of the town of Maumere, the second-largest on the island in East Nusa Tenggara province.
- Earlier in 1992, a powerful earthquake off the island of Flores triggered a tsunami that killed at least 2,500 people. Among Indonesia’s string of deadly quakes was a devastating 2004 magnitude 9.1 tremor that struck off the coast of Sumatra and triggered a tsunami that killed 220,000 throughout the region, including about 170,000 in Indonesia.
