Saudi Arabia signs with Lucid company to purchase about 100,000 electric cars
Saudi Arabia's government announced that, it has entered into an agreement with Lucid Company to purchase a minimum 50,000 electric vehicles and a maximum of 100,000 vehicles within 10 years, with the aim of diversifying its fleet of vehicles to be environmentally friendly. This agreement is an important step in line with achieving the goals of Saudi Vision 2030, which seeks to achieve wide-ranging reforms at the level of the economy, society and quality of life, diversify the Kingdom's economy and build new sectors that fit with the future and create job opportunities for Saudi nationals.
- The move also comes in line with the Green Saudi initiative and the Green Middle East initiative, which were previously announced by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman, in addition to reflecting the government's efforts to diversify its fleet with the aim for reducing carbon emissions and encourage the use of sustainable transport. - Lucid has been selected as they are building a factory to assemble these vehicles within the Kingdom, which will move over time to full production, in support of local content, which will contribute to diversifying the economy and achieving returns in line with Saudi Vision 2030, in addition to making Saudi Arabia a major center for the regional and global industry for the next generation of electric cars, Lucid aims to produce up to 150,000 cars annually.
- By purchasing these vehicles, Saudi Arabia aims to diversify technologies used in the field of private transportation as part of its efforts to develop vehicle emissions management technologies, which include, but are no limited to, the manufacture of electric vehicles using modern technologies, programs for the development of advanced low-emission fuels and the experiment and development of vehicles, hydrogen cell vehicle technologies.
- Kingdom's conclusion of this agreement came at a time when the world is witnessing a noticeable increase in demand of electric cars, and many other governments are requested such a type. The agreement also represents an opportunity for the Kingdom to work with Lucid to develop new models and vehicles that suit the needs of the government fleet.
