Saudi Arabia and Iran agrees to resume its relations and reopen the Embassies
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Iran agreed on Friday, to reestablish diplomatic ties and reopen their embassies within a maximum of 2 months, this is happened nearly 7 years after their diplomatic relations broke down for the longest time.
In order to resolve their differences through dialogue and diplomacy within the framework of their fraternal ties, and in line with the principles and purposes of the charters of the United Nations and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, as well as international conventions and norms, Saudi Arabia and Iran's diplomatic relations were restored through Chinese mediation.
- The delegations of Saudi Arabia and Iran, led by Dr. Musaed bin Muhammad Al-Aiban, Minister of State, Member of the Cabinet, and National Security Advisor in Saudi Arabia, and Admiral Ali Shamkhani Amin, Iran's Supreme National Security Council held talks in Beijing from March 6 to March 10, 2023 AD, according to a joint statement from Saudi Arabia, Iran, and the Republic of China. - As a result of negotiations, Saudi Arabia and Iran have agreed to restart diplomatic ties and reopen their embassies and representations within a two-month window, with a focus on upholding each state's sovereignty and avoiding from interfering in one another's internal affairs.
- Additionally, the two nations decided to put into effect their security cooperation agreement, which was signed on 1/22/1422 AH (4/17/2001 AD), as well as their general agreement for cooperation in the areas of economy, trade, investment, technology, science, culture, sports, and youth, which was signed on 2/2/1419 AH (5/27/ 1998 AD).
- China played a significant role in those negotiations after Iraq attempted to make progress in this area during the previous years. Saudi Arabia praises the efforts made by Iraq and Sultanate of Oman :
- Iraq and the Sultanate of Oman received praise and thanks from the Saudi and Iranian parties for hosting the rounds of talks between the two sides in 2021 and 2022. The leadership and administration of the China were also thanked by the two sides for having hosted the negotiations, supporting them, and working to make them successful.
Saudi Arabia thanked China for its big role in resolving issues with Iran :
- Dr. Musaed bin Muhammad Al-Aiban, Minister of State, Member of the Council of Ministers, and National Security Adviser, confirmed that the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Crown Prince and Prime Minister Muhammad bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, welcomed the President Xi Jinping, President of the People's Republic of China, for taking the kind initiative to foster friendly relations between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The agreement is the result of 2 year talks and is based on respect for the soverignty of states - Saudi Foreign Minister :
- Prince Faisal bin Farhan, the foreign minister of Saudi Arabia, revealed that two years of negotiations led to the decision to resume diplomatic relations with Iran. He highlighted that discussion is the most efficient approach to handle any issues and stressed that the agreement with Iran is founded on respect for states sovereignty. - Bin Farhan also said that the Kingdom's belief in conversation is what led to the agreement with Iran, adding that the two sides had come to agreements based on good neighborliness. The foreign minister made clear the desire to advance the interests of all nations in the area and ensure their security when he spoke of looking forward with optimism and trying to strengthen the relationship with Iran.
Iran to stop its support for Houthi militia :
According to political analyst Ayed Al-Manna, Iran will stop supporting the Houthi militia in order to strengthen its ties with Saudi Arabia. He said Iran's economy is struggling, suggesting that its draining of finances and arming of the Houthis and others may improve this situation because it will prioritize its own issues above its exterior relations, while speaking with Al Arabiya.
