Fasting for 6 days in Shawwal month, emphasized in various authentic Hadith sources, serves as a spiritual boost and provides an opportunity for Muslims to continue the spirit of Ramadan while gaining immense rewards.
As per the Sahih Muslim hadeeth (1164), Abu Aiyub Al-Ansari (RA) narrated that, The Messenger of Allah (Prophet Mohammed [Peace Be Upon Him]) said that, "Whoever fasts during the month of Ramadan and then follows it with 6 days of Shawwal will be rewarded as, if he had fasted the entire year."
The six days of fasting can be observed consecutively or separately within the month of Shawwal, whichever is easier. These fasts are voluntary (Sunnah) not mandatory. Read : Saudi Arabia sets expiry date of Umrah visas for this Hijri year

A. It is permissible to start observing these fasts one or more days afterwards of Eid Al-Fitr.
