Kerala's man to release from Saudi prison, after 18 years
The release of Abdul Rahim, a native of Kozhikode in India's Kerala who has been imprisoned in a Saudi jail for the last 18 years on allegations of murdering a teenage boy, brings one step closer, as the payment of the compensation money claimed by the victim's family transferred to India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). 'Save Abdul Rahim' was the name of the crowdfunding campaign that the action committee established under a trust used to collect Blood Money.
- On May 23, the Abdul Rahim Legal Assistance Committee sent 15 million Saudi riyals (about 34 crore Indian Rupees) to an account established by the MEA. This crowdfunding campaign has been reported to be the largest of its kind in Kerala, India.
- In accordance with the instructions given by the Indian Embassy in Saudi Arabia, the trustees K Suresh, KK Alikkutty, and Gireesh fulfilled the necessary processes for the transfer of funds.
- The Blood money, or Diya, had already been prepared when the committee informed the Saudi court through its agents on April 15. After receiving official notice from the court, the deceased's relatives expressed their readiness to accept the monetary settlement and pardon. Convenor K.K. Alikkutty told Indian media that the money will be sent to the deceased's relatives after being deposited in a Saudi court.
The most recent turn of events is seen as a pivotal step in rescuing Abdul Rahim from a foreign death row.
Mr. Rahim, a 26-year-old autorickshaw driver from Feroke, came to Saudi Arabia in quest of a better life. He began working as a driver and caretaker for a Saudi citizen's partially paralyzed son. The youngster used a specialized device fastened to his neck for both breathing and eating.
Mr. Rahim claims that he was attempting to calm down a teenager (15 year-old differently-abled boy) who was yelling at him to loudly disregard a red traffic light when he unintentionally dislocated the medical device attached to the boy's shoulder, which was helping the boy to breathe, fell inside the car. After a little while, the youngster fainted and passed away. Read : Absher launches number of new services online for Citizens and Expatriates
- Following the boy's family's refusal to offer amnesty, the Saudi government imposed the death penalty in 2018 for murder. In the year 2022, the verdict was upheld by the appeal court, and the Supreme Court later confirmed this decision.
- After reaching an arrangement with the relatives of the deceased youngster to take Diya instead of executing Rahim, the court has temporarily suspended the execution of his punishment. Fifteen million Saudi Riyals is the agreed-upon sum.
