Saudi Embassy reopens in Afghanistan after 3 years

Saudi Arabia's embassy resumed diplomatic operations on Sunday in Afghanistan's capital Kabul, following a three-year pause. “Based on the commitment of the government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to offer all services to the brotherly Afghan people, it has been opted to resume the activities of the diplomatic mission of the Kingdom in Kabul starting on December 22,” the Saudi embassy said in a statement on its X account. Saudi Arabia had removed their diplomats from the Afghan capital on August 15, 2021, immediately after the Taliban movement announced its dominance over all sections of the Afghan capital. The Kingdom attributed this to the “unstable situation” generated by the Taliban’s return to power following the United States’ exit from the country.

Three years later, Riyadh decided to continue the work of the consular section of the embassy in Kabul. It also declared providing humanitarian help in the country through its humanitarian arm, King Salman Humanitarian Help and Relief Center (KSrelief).

In February 2023, all Saudi ambassadors departed Afghanistan again and returned to Saudi Arabia for security reasons. According to a ruling made by the Russian Supreme Court on February 14, 2003, the Taliban movement was categorized as a terrorist organization, and its activities are prohibited in Russia.
