Makkah Grand Mosque has never used backup electricity in last 40 years

During a recent forum in the Saudi port city of Jeddah centered on the annual Islamic pilgrimage Hajj, Ghazi Al Shahrani, CEO of the General Authority for Care of the Two Holy Mosques, stressed that the Grand Mosque stands out among other sites due to its immense size, continuous activity throughout the year, and the highest number of visitors.
"This makes the issue regarding sustainability necessary and fateful for us," the official continued during a panel session entitled "Sustainability and Quality of Facilities and Services in the Two Holy Mosques" held last week as part of the Hajj Conference and Exhibition.
He claims that the state entity responsible for Islam's two holiest mosques is presently collaborating with other organizations to implement smart facility management apps and high-tech sensors. The Makkah Grand Mosque is a destination for millions of Muslims every year, who come to complete the minor pilgrimages of Umrah and Hajj.
All Muslims who are physically fit and financially stable are required by Islam to perform Hajj, one of the five obligatory duties, once during their lives.
