Under the Ministry of Energy's oversight, the Kingdom aims to reach up to 48 gigawatt hours of storage capacity by 2030 using the National Renewable Energy Program. 26 gigawatt-hours of storage projects starting now have been initiated and are still under development through several phases.

Since the Kingdom wants renewable energy to account for 50% of all electricity generation by 2030, these initiatives are quite important in helping the growth of renewable energy, thereby improving the accomplishment of the national energy mix targets.

The Kingdom is leading emerging markets, seeing fast development in energy storage projects, according to Wood Mackenzie, a consultancy focused on the energy sector; the addition of new storage capacities over the next ten years is expected to improve its ranking among the top ten global markets in this sector.

This development fits the ambitious objectives of the Vision 2030 of the Kingdom since energy storage is an essential element to enable the increase of electricity generation from renewable sources such as solar and wind energy. With 22 gigawatts by 2026 and 8 gigawatt-hours of energy storage projects by 2025, the Kingdom ranks third globally for energy storage projects behind China and the United States based on storage capacities reported thus far.

Under this framework, the Bisha Battery Energy Storage Project, which consists of 448 sophisticated battery containers with 500 megabytes of storage capacity for four hours, was launched.

The project guarantees backup power when needed, so improving flexibility in managing electricity supplies, and supports the use of smart solutions to achieve a more sustainable energy future by enabling batteries to be charged during periods of low demand and discharged during peak times. The Kingdom's energy sector is undergoing a qualitative change that improves its leadership in the manufacturing and exporting of several kinds of energy. By the end of 2024, distributed over the several production phases, the total capacity of renewable energy projects stood at 44.1 gigawatts.

Energy storage helps to increase the dependability of electricity supplies, improve the capacity of the national system to withstand emergency situations, and enable the accomplishment of strategic goals for growth of the energy sector in the Kingdom. Like us and follow us on our Facebook page
