Muslims are advised to fast 6 days in Shawwal after fasting in Ramadan
The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah in Saudi Arabia advised the Muslims this week that fasting for only 6 more days in Shawwal after Ramadan could earn them the reward of a full year of worship. Trending: India passes controversial Waqf amendment bill in upper and lower house
The six-day Shawwal fast is being promoted by the ministry as a way for Muslims to continue the Ramadan spirit beyond the end of the holy month.
According to a hadith (saying of the Prophet Muhammad), which the ministry referenced in a statement, "Whoever fasts the month of Ramadan and follows it with six days of Shawwal, it is as if he fasted for a lifetime" (Narrated by Muslim, Hadith 1164).
Islamic scholars state that the spiritual benefit of fasting for a complete year can be achieved by fasting for 30 days during Ramadan and an additional 6 days during Shawwal. According to Islamic law, the effect is the same as if the 36 days were 360, or nearly a full lunar year, of good deeds multiplied by ten.
The six days of fasting can be spread out over the month of Shawwal, according to the ministry. They do not have to be continuous. Most Viewed: Forbes issued billionaires list in 2025
The Prophet (peace be upon him) fasted on Mondays and Thursdays, according to a hadith related by Abu Hurairah. When asked why, he replied, "On Mondays and Thursdays, deeds are presented to Allah, and I like my deeds to be presented while I am fasting."
A suggested 6-day plan to reap multiple benefits. Fast 6 days of Shawwal on Monday, Thursday, and White Days (13th, 14th, and 15th of the Hijri month). Which are 10th April (Thursday), 11th April (Friday, White Day, 13th Shawwal), 12th April (Saturday, White Day, 14th Shawwal), 13th April (Sunday, White Day, 15th Shawwal), 14th April (Monday), and 17th April (Thursday).
All eligible Muslims are required to fast during Ramadan; however, the six days of Shawwal are entirely optional. However, academics in Saudi Arabia and the rest of the Islamic world have long advocated for their use as a means of maintaining the commitment and self-control that are features of Ramadan.
